Teacher Code of Ethics & Safeguarding Policy

Ethical standards, professional conduct, and safeguarding responsibilities for teachers at Madinatul Uloom Madrasa & Orphanage, aligned with Islamic values and international child protection practices.

1. Purpose

This policy establishes the ethical standards, professional conduct, and safeguarding responsibilities required of all teachers working at Madinatul Uloom Madrasa & Orphanage. The purpose is to ensure that teachers provide safe, respectful, and high-quality education while protecting the dignity and well-being of every student, particularly orphan and vulnerable children.

2. Core Ethical Principles

All teachers must uphold the following Islamic and professional values:

  • Ikhlas (Sincerity) – Teaching with pure intention for the sake of Allah.
  • Amanah (Trustworthiness) – Protecting the trust placed in educators.
  • Adl (Justice) – Treating all students fairly and equally.
  • Rahmah (Compassion) – Showing kindness and patience toward students.
  • Taqwa (God-consciousness) – Maintaining integrity and moral responsibility.

Teachers must serve as role models for students both inside and outside the classroom.

3. Professional Conduct

Teachers must:

  • Maintain professionalism in behaviour, language, and communication.
  • Respect all students regardless of background, ability, or status.
  • Follow madrasa policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, and diligence.
  • Dress modestly and appropriately according to Islamic standards.
  • Maintain respectful relationships with colleagues, staff, and guardians.

Teachers must represent the madrasa with honour, integrity, and responsibility.

4. Responsibilities Toward Students

Teachers are responsible for:

  • Providing effective instruction and academic support.
  • Encouraging positive character and Islamic manners.
  • Promoting discipline through guidance and mentorship.
  • Ensuring a respectful and safe learning environment.
  • Monitoring student progress, behaviour, and well-being.

Teachers should strive to nurture knowledge, faith, and moral character in their students.

5. Safeguarding Responsibilities

Teachers play a critical role in protecting children from harm. Teachers must:

  • Ensure students are adequately supervised during activities.
  • Be alert to signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns promptly to the administration.
  • Follow child protection and safeguarding guidelines at all times.
  • Promote safe, non-violent and respectful classroom environments.

The safety and welfare of students must always be the highest priority.

6. Prohibited Conduct

Teachers must never engage in behaviour that harms, exploits, or endangers students. Prohibited actions include (but are not limited to):

  • Physical punishment, hitting, or any form of violence.
  • Verbal abuse, humiliation, threats, or intimidation.
  • Bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind.
  • Inappropriate physical contact or touching.
  • Any form of sexual harassment or exploitation.
  • Private meetings with students in isolated or unsupervised areas (without visibility or accountability).

Such behaviour is strictly forbidden and may lead to disciplinary and/or legal action.

7. Boundaries and Appropriate Interaction

Teachers must maintain professional boundaries with students at all times. Teachers should:

  • Interact with students in open and observable settings.
  • Avoid favouritism or inappropriate emotional closeness.
  • Maintain respectful, age-appropriate communication.
  • Avoid sharing personal problems or seeking emotional support from students.

Professional boundaries protect both students and teachers.

8. Reporting Misconduct

If a teacher observes or suspects any form of misconduct, abuse, or safeguarding concern, they must report it immediately to:

  • Executive Director / Principal.
  • Child Protection Officer or Focal Person (if appointed).
  • Executive Committee (through designated reporting channels).

All reports will be handled confidentially and investigated appropriately. Failure to report serious concerns may itself be treated as a violation of this policy.

9. Disciplinary Actions

Violation of this Teacher Code of Ethics & Safeguarding Policy may result in:

  • Verbal warning.
  • Written warning.
  • Suspension from duties.
  • Termination of employment or teaching assignment.
  • Reporting to legal or regulatory authorities where required by law or in cases of serious misconduct.

The madrasa maintains a zero-tolerance policy for abuse, exploitation, or serious ethical violations.

10. Training and Awareness

The madrasa will provide guidance and training to teachers on:

  • Child protection and safeguarding.
  • Positive, non-violent discipline techniques.
  • Ethical teaching practices and professional conduct.
  • Islamic character development and tarbiyah.

Continuous professional development is encouraged to maintain high standards of teaching and student care.

11. Commitment Statement

All teachers must sign a declaration confirming that they:

  • Understand this Teacher Code of Ethics & Safeguarding Policy in full.
  • Agree to follow the rules and standards described.
  • Commit to protecting the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students.

12. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed periodically by the Executive Committee and Permanent Committee to ensure that safeguarding and ethical standards remain effective, up to date, and aligned with institutional goals, Islamic values, and relevant regulations.
