Math 1–10 & Shapes Syllabus
Granular syllabus for early numeracy: counting 1–10, number concepts, and basic shapes for Noorani Level 1.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this component, the student should be able to:
- Count objects reliably from 1 to 10 (forward and basic backward counting).
- Recognize and write numerals 1–10 clearly.
- Compare small quantities using "more/less" and "equal" informally.
- Identify basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in real objects.
Syllabus Structure (Steps 1–4)
Designed to integrate with daily activities and games, this syllabus can be spread across the Noorani Level 1 year.
Step 1: Oral Counting & Number Sense (1–10)
Building familiarity with the counting sequence and linking numbers to real objects.
- Daily counting aloud to 10 (eventually 20) with class together.
- Use beads, blocks, fingers, and classroom items for one‑to‑one counting.
- Simple games: "How many?" – students count objects placed on a table.
- Mastery: student can count 1–10 without skipping or mixing order.
Step 2: Numeral Recognition & Writing (1–10)
Connecting spoken numbers to written symbols and practising basic handwriting.
- Introduce each numeral with big board writing and arrowed stroke order.
- Use tracing worksheets, then independent writing in math copybooks.
- Match numerals to sets of objects (e.g., card "3" with 3 blocks).
- Mastery: student writes each numeral on the line without reversal or major distortion.
Step 3: Comparing & Simple Operations (Informal)
Very early introduction to "more/less" and "adding/removing" using real objects.
- Use two groups of items: "Which has more? Which has less?"
- Simple story problems: "You have 2 apples, I give you 1 more – how many now?"
- Use fingers and counters, not written symbols, at this stage.
- Mastery: child can answer simple "more or less" and "now how many?" questions with support.
Step 4: Shapes & Spatial Awareness
Recognizing and naming basic 2D shapes in the classroom and environment.
- Introduce circle, square, triangle, and rectangle with large cut‑outs.
- Shape hunt: find shapes around the classroom (clock, book, window, etc.).
- Drawing shapes inside boxes or along dotted outlines in workbooks.
- Mastery: student can name and point to shapes correctly when asked.
Recommended Daily Time Allocation
For the Math block (around 30–40 minutes) in Noorani Level 1:
- 5–10 minutes: oral counting games and quick revision.
- 10–15 minutes: focused activity on current step (counting, writing, or shapes).
- 5–10 minutes: hands‑on practice with objects, cards, or drawing.
- 2–3 minutes: short recap where students explain "what we learned today".
