Math 1–100 & Basic Operations Syllabus
Granular syllabus for extended counting, place value, and introductory addition and subtraction for Noorani Level 2.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this component, the student should be able to:
- Count forwards and backwards between 1 and 100 with confidence.
- Understand tens and ones (place value) in 2‑digit numbers.
- Perform basic addition and subtraction within 20 using objects and written sums.
- Solve simple word problems related to everyday life (e.g., pens, books, money).
Syllabus Structure (Steps 1–4)
This syllabus continues from Level 1 Math and can be spread across the Noorani Level 2 year, integrating written and hands‑on activities.
Step 1: Counting to 100 & Number Sequences
Strengthening counting skills and recognizing patterns in the number line.
- Daily oral counting 1–50, then 1–100; later counting backwards from 20 or 50.
- Number line activities: filling in missing numbers, skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
- Games: "Which number comes before/after/between?"
- Mastery: student can correctly identify and say numbers shown randomly on a number chart.
Step 2: Place Value (Tens & Ones)
Understanding that 2‑digit numbers are made of tens and ones.
- Use bundling sticks or blocks to show groups of ten and single units.
- Write numbers like 34 as "3 tens and 4 ones" using simple charts.
- Practice expanding numbers: 25 = 20 + 5, 48 = 40 + 8.
- Mastery: student can decompose and compose numbers up to 99 using tens and ones.
Step 3: Basic Addition & Subtraction (Within 20)
Introducing written sums and mental strategies with small numbers.
- Start with concrete objects; then move to number line and written sums.
- Practice facts like 3+2, 5+4, 10−3, 9−5 etc. using oral drills and worksheets.
- Introduce vertical format sums without carrying/borrowing at first.
- Mastery: student can solve simple sums within 20 with minimal support.
Step 4: Word Problems & Everyday Math
Applying number skills to simple real‑life situations.
- Story problems: "Ali has 3 pens. His friend gives him 2 more. How many pens now?"
- Use pictures to show situations and ask "How many in total? How many left?"
- Connect to madrasa life: counting books, plates, students in class, etc.
- Mastery: student can explain whether to add or subtract and give the correct answer for simple problems.
Recommended Daily Time Allocation
For the Math 1–100 & operations block (around 30–40 minutes) in Noorani Level 2:
- 5–10 minutes: counting warm‑up and revision of facts.
- 10–15 minutes: new concept or practice on current step (place value, sums, or sequences).
- 10 minutes: hands‑on activity with objects, number cards, or worksheets.
- 5 minutes: quick oral quiz or word problem discussion.
