English A–Z & Picture Vocabulary Syllabus
Granular syllabus for English alphabet recognition, basic phonics, and picture‑based vocabulary for Noorani Level 1.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this component, the student should be able to:
- Recognize and name all 26 English letters (capital and small).
- Identify the basic sound of each letter in simple words.
- Connect pictures to common words (e.g., apple, ball, cat) and say them clearly.
- Write capital and small letters with acceptable classroom handwriting.
Syllabus Structure (Steps 1–4)
This syllabus is organized in four steps and can be covered across the Noorani Level 1 year, integrating with other subjects.
Step 1: Alphabet Recognition (A–Z)
Learning letter names and order using charts and songs.
- Use alphabet song and wall charts to introduce A–Z.
- Daily activity: teacher points to letters; students say names together and individually.
- Start with capital letters; introduce small letters in pairs (A/a, B/b, etc.).
- Mastery: student can identify any letter when shown randomly (flashcards/board).
Step 2: Letter Sounds & Phonics
Connecting letters with their most common sound in simple words.
- Teach one main sound per letter (e.g., /a/ for A as in "apple", /b/ for B as in "ball").
- Use actions or gestures with each sound to help memory.
- Blend sounds orally in simple CVC patterns (e.g., c‑a‑t, b‑a‑t) without stressing spelling.
- Mastery: student can give at least one example word when teacher shows a letter.
Step 3: Picture Vocabulary (Theme‑Based)
Building a starter vocabulary bank using pictures and real objects.
- Start with familiar themes: classroom, body parts, family, animals, food.
- Use flashcards and realia (actual objects) for words like pen, book, bag, apple.
- Practice: "What is this?" – student answers with single word ("apple", "book").
- Mastery: student can correctly name most items in classroom/thematic posters.
Step 4: Handwriting & Copywork
Practising clear letter formation and copying simple words.
- Model capital and small letters on the board; students copy into copybooks.
- Begin with large tracing, then move to independent writing on 4‑line copy.
- Introduce simple copywork: copying words under matching pictures (e.g., "cat" under a cat).
- Mastery: legible letters with consistent size and spacing, minimal reversals.
Recommended Daily Time Allocation
For the English block (around 30–40 minutes) in Noorani Level 1:
- 5–10 minutes: alphabet song, quick recognition drill (flashcards/board).
- 10–15 minutes: new letter sound or vocabulary items from current step.
- 5–10 minutes: picture vocabulary games and oral Q&A.
