English Reading & Conversation Syllabus

Granular syllabus for reading short texts, answering questions, and everyday conversation in English for Noorani Level 3.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this component, the student should be able to:

  • Read short English passages (4–8 sentences) with correct pronunciation and basic fluency.
  • Answer who/what/where/why questions about a passage in simple English.
  • Use everyday conversation: greetings, introductions, classroom talk, and simple requests.
  • Speak in short sentences with understandable pronunciation and basic grammar (present tense, simple past).

Syllabus Structure (Phases 1–4)

This syllabus builds on Level 2 English vocabulary and simple passages. It adds longer reading, comprehension in English, and guided conversation practice.

Phase 1: Short Passage Reading (4–8 Sentences)

Graded passages with familiar vocabulary and clear sentence patterns; focus on reading aloud and silent reading for meaning.

  • Topics: my day, my family, the madrasa, seasons, helping at home, a short story (e.g., honesty, sharing).
  • Pre-teach 2–4 new words per passage; read passage aloud as model, then choral read, then individual read.
  • Silent read for understanding; underline or note difficult words to ask about.
  • Mastery: student reads one paragraph (4–6 sentences) aloud with fewer than 3 pronunciation errors and can tell the main idea in one sentence.

Phase 2: Comprehension Questions in English

Answer questions about the passage using full sentences in English, not single words.

  • Literal: Who is in the story? What did he do? Where did they go? When did it happen?
  • Simple inference: Why did he do that? How did she feel? What will happen next?
  • Student answers orally first; then write 1–2 sentence answers for 2–3 questions per lesson.
  • Mastery: student answers 3–4 questions correctly in simple English (spoken or written) with minimal prompting.

Phase 3: Everyday Conversation (Greetings, Classroom, Requests)

Practise real-life phrases and short exchanges so students can use English in daily situations.

  • Greetings and introductions: Good morning / afternoon; How are you? I am fine; My name is…; Nice to meet you.
  • Classroom: May I come in? May I go out? Can I have a pen? Please give me the book.; Thank you; You are welcome.
  • Simple requests and responses: What is this? It is a…; Do you have…? Yes, I do / No, I don't.; I need…
  • Role-play in pairs: teacher–student, student–student; swap roles; use picture cues.
  • Mastery: student can take part in a 4–6 line exchange (greeting + 2–3 Q&A) with understandable pronunciation.

Phase 4: Speaking in Sentences (Present & Simple Past)

Produce short descriptions and simple past narratives using common verbs and time words.

  • Present: I read Quran every day. She helps her mother. We go to madrasa in the morning.
  • Simple past: Yesterday I read two pages. Last week we had a test. He said thank you.
  • Picture description: 2–3 sentences about a picture (e.g., "This is a boy. He has a book. He is reading.").
  • Teacher corrects gently; focus on meaning first, then key grammar (e.g., subject–verb agreement, past -ed).
  • Mastery: student says 3–4 connected sentences about a picture or "what I did yesterday" with mostly correct grammar and clear meaning.

Recommended Daily Time Allocation

For the English reading & conversation block (around 35–40 minutes) in Noorani Level 3:

  • 10–12 minutes: conversation practice — phrases, role-play, or picture-based Q&A in pairs/small groups.
